The second Malström synthesizer generates a carrier with a sawtooth waveform. The sawtooth has a lot of intrinsic harmonics which makes it perfect as a signal to be altered by the vocoder. It is this carrier which is modulated by the main sequencer to create the tune. The output of the carrier Malström is routed to the carrier input on the vocoder.
The pattern in the Matrix is used to modulate the modulator Malström which is then used to modulate the vocoder. This gives a changing pattern of filters which accent or suppress various harmonics of the carrier. As the sequence runs, the graphics display of modulation levels on the vocoder dance in response to the changing filters as modulated by the Matrix-driven Malström synth.
